Days like today are always interesting because I know it can happen only once a year. However, today is extra special to me because of the opening ceremonies of the XXIX olympiad. As I sit here and watch these amazing athletes march into the stadium, I see that for this moment, the world has a bit of unity. I see this and I have hope, hope for unity and hope for peace.

During one of the breaks, Exxon Mobile advertised their dream of providing malaria relief in Africa by distributing bed nets and medications. The commercial stated they will not be satisfied until these necessities are available to every family. Wow! they don't just want to look good by doing good, they want life change for everyone in Africa! Dreams such as these are what changes the world.

I am thrilled to have the opportunity to watch the olympics over the course of the next two and a half weeks. I sure hope these olympics will provide the Chinese theme of harmony among the athletes, who are highly regarded in every nation.

As the Chinese make the final entrance of the night, a 9 year old boy accompanied Yao Ming as he toted the flag of China. This boy was affected by the earthquake this past May that killed 70,000 people. This young boy exited his class free of harm, then returned to the class room to rescue two of his class mates. He was asked why he went back and he claimed he was a hall monitor and class leader...he had to!

let the games begin!

let the games begin indeed. im also a fan of the olympic games.

i wish the peaceful ceremonies made me feel like you bryan, but i get very discouraged. i know its wonderful for countries to come to together to celebrate their athletes and competition and sport... but i get sad that the peace often stops there. its like the worlds powers stop for a moment (at times only to watch it further display its powers) but then continue to seek out their own gain 20 days later. its a window into the world we want and hope for... but im getting more and more disapointed its only a window.

i need your outlook.

and i need the us basketball team to NOT be named "the redemption team." i mean, i know we invented the game, but can we think of a name anymore entitled or slightly arrogant? i don't know. maybe we didn't mean it that way?

i know exactly what you are saying. it seems like i always have to dig deep to find anything positive to say (which sucks, i don't want to be so cynical). But when I say them, i mean it.

sadly enough, with the stabbing incedent and war in russia, my hope is not quite as vast.

And as for the "redemption team," that is just sad because we should not win by less than 40 with the scrubs of the NBA. arrogant/entitling? absolutely, but the problem is no one cares. do these guys love the game of basketball? maybe, but they play for money, fame, and self. The number one goal in all of professional sports is not to win...it's to make money and i would say that to any pro athelte's face. If it were, they wouldn't hold out from training camp or demand a trade, calling the game a "business". If they really wanted to win, they would take less of a salary so the organization could pay other players and stay under the salary cap.

But, do they want to win? oh, yeah...but not as much as they want to be: "paid what i deserve." it should be a privilege not a merit.

yeah the "redemption team" is pretty lame when you have lebron, kobe, and wade starting.

i remember watching the ceremony after i read about the news with russia and georgia. it seemed weird to watch them both march into the stadium.

at least we've moved away from boycotts.
